White Guard and the White Death

A nice relaxing tune by Zoya Yaschenko and the White Guard singing about Saint Petersburg
(санкт-петербург)

зоя ященко и группа белая гвардия

ahh - she has such a beautiful voice.

Here's a link to their official site, which I will include as I am always jacking their music, so don't be afraid to check it out.

Even Simo Hayha has enjoyed their site, as clearly shown in the photo below

And while we are on the subject of Simo; one of the most incredible stories in military history - is his tale, and how he became known asThe White
Death

Here he is "at work"

Corporal Simo was deployed as a Finnish sniper against the Soviet army, during the Winter War of 1939-1940.
Standing at 5'3" he utilized the Finnish M/28-30 rifle, as it's size suited his small stature. The rifle had iron sights - not telescopic, which helped keep him better hidden; furthermore, telescopic sights could fog up. The iron sights are much more difficult to obtain accuracy however.
Keep this in mind as you continue reading.

During a period of 100 days, in temperatures between - 40 C and - 20 C, Simo was credited with 505 confirmed kills of Russian soldiers, using this simple weapon. In all likelihood however, he probably killed more than 540.

He also killed an additional 200+ men using a machine gun.

The Soviets made several attempts to dispatch him - from artillery bombing -  to airstrikes - to specially trained anti-sniper units. Always Simo survived; and he would also kill the other teams of snipers.

Eventually, the odds of battle caught up with him and on March 6 1940 - one week before hostilities ended, he was shot through the face, severely wounded.

Simo's 15 year military career was over.

He was awarded the Cross of Liberty and the Medal of Liberty and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.

But years of rehabilitation followed the hero.

Simo would go on to breed dogs and hunt with the President of Finland..... and sign many autographs.
He lived to the ripe old age of 96 -  finally allowing the reaper to take him April 1 2002
(probably because he was bored)

When asked if he ever regretted killing so many, he replied:
" I only did my duty and what I was told to do, as well as I could"
