Those Were the Days
Such a nostalgic song, It has a timeless theme which touches us all. -AGE and IDEALISM-
The melody is from the **Russian Romance** song: Along the Long Road / дорогой длинною written by Boris Fomin.
The lyrics are English, penned by Gene Raskin, who was inspired from the Russian words to the song (written by Konstantin Podrevskii). Does that make any sense?
** Russian Romance was a particular genre of music, developed during Imperial Russia; peaking in popularity 1910's-1920's; until being suppressed by the Soviets.**
Such was/is the natural beauty Mary Hopkin (b.May 3,1950). The girl next door look. Wholesome. Refreshing. Innocent beauty.
Fantastic voice. She was only 18 y.o. when the song Those Were the Days was recorded.
Both videos below have the same version of the song.
#1 video has many still photos of Mary, but no live footage.
#2 video is Mary preforming live, but is of horrible quality (looks like it was filmed through a beer bottle by an epileptic monkey)
This way you have the choice to view either or both.
#1
#2
Here is a current site of Mary Hopkin's that is worth a view.
Today she looks happy and healthy. :)
The earliest, known recording of the song Along the Long Road by Александр Вертинский / Alexander Vertinsky (b.March 21,1889 d.May 21,1957) circa 1925/26
Really not that bad at all.
