Christmas Truce 1914

In the days leading up to Christmas 1914, a series of unofficial truces or halts in the fighting, took place along The Western Front, between the soldiers of the British and German armies.
A brief respite from the brutality of the trenches.

To be later known as: The Christmas Truce of 1914.

Completely against the wishes of their higher commanders, the men did something which has seldom been done before or since. They exchanged gifts, cigarettes, alcohol. In some areas, they even had brief soccer matches.
......

Based upon these events, is a very touching scene from Oh What a Lovely War (1969)

"Christmas Truce"

Sadly, many of these actors's real life counterparts, would kill/be killed in the coming weeks...or wounded - some maimed for life; many would be mentally destroyed.

Not one, would leave The War to End Wars untouched in some fashion.

Yet, for those brief moments in December 1914, when their inherent need for love and acceptance, overruled the violence and hatred, the men were brothers again.
