Rock Group Midnight Oil - 2000 Olympic Games

In keeping with the current Sochi Olympics, a loosely related Olympic post we have.

First, let us introduce the main characters.
Australian rock group Midnight Oil as they were in the 1980 s

and it's dynamic lead singer Peter Garrett

Garrett ( lead vocals, harmonica ) and the rest of the Midnight Oil line-up:
  • Rob Hirst - drums
  • Jim Moginie - keyboard
  • Andrew James - bass guitar - 1972-1980 replaced by Gifford due to illness )
  • Martin Rotsey - lead guitar
  • Peter Gifford - bass guitar ( 1980-1987 resigned and replaced by Hillman )
  • Bones Hillman - bass guitar

- took a stand against corporate greed, the plight of the environment and mistreatment of Australia's aboriginal population. Famously appearing at the closing ceremonies of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sidney, the entire group dressed in black, with each person bearing the word SORRY.

.... which was in direct reference to Australia's mistreatment of it's Aboriginal people back in the 1930 s ....the taking of their ancestral lands and forced resettlement of it's people.

Oh my god - what a powerful song, performance and band.

Earlier that same year, the Australian government under the leadership of Prime Minister John Howard had been unwilling to issue a public apology for these past policies, even in the face of public pressure.....but Howard was there at the ceremonies.....listening to his favorite Midnight Oil song: "Beds Are Burning"

Funny huh? In the view of millions...the group apologized for it's Australian government......FINALLY!!!

Here is the link to the original version of the epic song: Beds Are Burning (Midnight Oil)

  2. Sony's PlayStation 3 games are excellent and surpass the other gaming consoles in terms of quality graphics and sound system. Still the skyrocketing prices of the PS3 games is the one reason for the PS3 gamers who are backing up their PS3 games. MurahQQ
