We have two fantastic songs, each of which originated from an earlier, traditional folk song.
Sloop John B and The John B Sails
Both songs are equally genuine and stand-alone.
.........................
First, the rousing number by The Beach Boys.
Sloop John B ( 1966 )
Ranked #271 in the top 500 Best Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine.
The Beach Boys at their finest.
Other artists from Roger Whittaker to Johnny Cash, to Dwight Yoakum and many many more have recorded this song, or variations of the original Bahamian folk song "The John B Sails" ( circa 1917 )
Here we have an excellent version of that song preformed by The Browns ( 1960 )
Based upon a turn of the 19th century fishing vessel and it's crew. A crew who were notorious at drunken "merry-making" while in port and out of port no doubt. Oddly enough, the ship ran aground and sank off the coast of Governor's Harbour, Bahamas.....I'm sure that the "merry making" had nothing to do with it.....
