Brest Fortress/Брестская крепость

Aleksey Gordeyevich Yeremenko

If you wish to see one of the best - on the edge of your seat - war movies of all time; then I highly recommend this Russian/Belorussian production, of the doomed, but heroic Soviet defense of Brest Fortress/Героическая оборона Брестской крепости (June/Июнь 1941)

Here is a trailer for you:

*** Because you are a bunch of spoiled babies, I have found a version with English sub-titles......WOO HOO!!!....but if you are not English, and you don't understand Russian, then the sub-titles will only add to your annoyance!

 I apologize in advance actually I don't care .... ***

The movie explains itself throughout; and you do not need to be a scholar of history to understand what is going on.

Sasha
It begins in the final hours of peace between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.
Before the deluge....
День памяти и скорби

**
PG 13 (violence)

Oh! I found out that Google blocks subtitles in Russian movies. Why? I don't know ( I'm not an encyclopedia ), but I will - eventually find a version of this movie with some. In the meantime, learn some Russian and watch the movie...or just watch the movie. Do whatever you like....but I would really like it, for you to watch this movie.....
.......really I would like it a lot
please do....

I shall add a few points to enable a better understanding of what is going on with the smaller details in the movie.
  • The little blond hair boy - Sasha - is a brother to the taller blond haired teenager; both are living on the base with their Aunt and Uncle ( the man and woman who are later defending in the room alone ). Sasha's own mom and dad died in the Spanish Civil War, fighting with the Spanish Communists.
  • His brother is giving him heck for not having played the music properly; later Sasha tells the Director of Music what happened, and the Director "orders him" to practice the song more, and that Sasha will be playing it at the next event.
  • The men looking at the map are the Fort's Commander and the Director of Music - who is also a communist officer. The Commander has disagreed with the "higher-up command's" plans for the Fortress troop placements, and he is now facing charges of "fear mongering". ( very real/stern punishment in Stalinist Russia )
  • The young officer being taken to the base in the truck, is a Political Commissar. It is his new assignment. He tries to get his own family to come live with him, but is unable ( thankfully so, as it will turnout ) due to a very busy pre-invasion rail system.

  • The men in uniforms arriving by train, during the last night of peace; are actually German soldiers dressed as Russian Border Guards. It is these troops which will infiltrate the fortress's security network and will seize the bridges leading into the fortress. They will also spread panic and confusion among st the Russians. It is this kind of "panic" that the one agent is spreading, as they are defending the barracks from attack by the Germans. He is telling the men to retreat. The Director of Music suspects him as being an agent and asks to see the bottom of his boots. Russian boots have square hob-nails, while the German ones are round (or viceaversa). This exposes the German agent ( even though his boots' nails were the right shape - he was tricked into exposing himself  ).
  • The bomb dropped towards the end, is a massive block-buster. It is this bomb which finally subdues the Russian resistance. ( and after over a week of fighting with no food or water )
  • The young Political Commissar voluntarily turns himself over to the German officer, knowing that it will mean his death. The Fortress Commander survives the battle, the prisoner of war camp, the war, and the anger of Stalin, but is disgraced and expelled from the Communist Party ( "take that for being right all along and leading a heroic defense " ). He does eventually receive full recognition/reinstatement and the highest medal of all - Hero of the Soviet Union
  • Anya ( the blond girl ), dies in an internment camp the year following her capture

I have received a reply from  MOONVAPORS........ from who's YouTube channel I got the movie.

At the bottom of the screen, press the CC. A box will pop up; and here you will click English.
 English subtitles will appear.

Geez!!!
Thanks to MOONVAPORS..... for resolving this dilemma. -I shall put you in the good line.

I believe that this has been the most troublesome post I have had.....
